The winner of the Olympic marathon was given strychnine, egg white and brandy during the race.
The race started at three in the afternoon, at around 32 °C, on dusty country roads shared with officials' cars. Thirty-two men started and fourteen finished. The winner was attended along the route by his trainers, who treated him at intervals with what they had brought.
